It was such a beautiful weekend!
White sand, blue water, green forests, calm and serenity…right here in Uganda! I travelled with four friends of mine that I serve with at my church. The purpose of this trip was for us to get away and get to know each other a little bit better and in a different setting. We thought, what better place to do this than Victoria Forest Resort, Ssese Islands…
A warm welcome
I contacted Victoria Forest Resort and they were pleased to host us. The resort is situated just five minutes away from the ferry port on the main island (it takes about 3.5 hours to get to the island by ferry, from Entebbe), making it very convenient. Once at the resort, we were welcomed with warm smiles, fresh juice and the sight of a very inviting swimming pool. We arrived in the evening, before the sun started to set. Eagerly, we checked into our rooms and rushed to take a dip in the pool before dinner and later, bonfire.
Beach strolls and island hops
After a good night’s sleep, I woke up to take a stroll on the beach. I was dying to dip my feet in the water and walk barefoot on the sand which I had only spotted from afar the previous day. It was a beautiful morning, the sun shone brightly with just the right amount of breeze to neutralize the heat…
I met the rest of the girls for breakfast and we discussed our plans for the day. Victoria Forest Resort has several activities for one to choose from including guided hikes, island tours, quad biking, canoeing and boat rides. We wanted a group activity that we would all engage in and so decided to prioritize a canoe ride to one of the popular islands close by – Virgin Island. We didn’t quite know what to expect on the island (or even how it got its name?), save for the scenery. The staff at Victoria Forest Resort, though pleasant, had a very laid back approach to touristy activities. I would advise anyone planning a visit to do research beforehand, so as not to miss out on what could have been exciting.
Thankfully, I’m here and I’ll show you a few pictures from the canoe ride and the island 🙂
But first, what I must say is don’t forget to pack sunscreen (I always forget this, I don’t know why!) as you can expect to spend quite a bit of time on the water and exposed to direct sunlight. Also, Virgin Island is the perfect place for some chill time and a picnic. If you can, pack a blanket, some food/ snacks as well as plenty of drinks and water as you will get thirsty on the canoe. Expect to see plenty of birds and a few crocodiles on the lake and once you get there, the island itself is charming! Expect thick forests, hammocks, swings, sand and glistering water (I did mention it’s the perfect place to chill, right?). Ultimately, expect the perfect day.
A stunning sunrise
The next morning, I was determined to catch the sunrise and thank God I did! I was up at some point in time before 7am and I watched as the sky magically transformed before my eyes from thick darkness to shades of deep orange, to purple, to pink, to grey. I’m a sucker for nature, beauty and this sort of thing and this was my highlight of the day. I was so glad I didn’t miss it!
After breakfast, we set off back to Entebbe and then Kampala. Based off my experience at Victoria Forest Resort, I would definitely go back there and to Ssese Islands. Would you?
