Lake Bunyonyi has been on my tour Uganda bucket list for a while now and so when the opportunity presented itself over the weekend, I literally hopped onto it. Lake Bunyonyi is found in Kabale, South Western Uganda and is definitely the most picturesque lake I have ever seen. It’s also a long drive away from Kampala city!
I travelled as part of a group trip dubbed “The Arcadia Xperience” to Arcadia Lodge in Kabale, overlooking the lake. It was an exciting road trip, to say the least. Kabale is about 400 kilometers from Kampala city however, the journey took most of Saturday with unexpected vehicle trouble along the way. This was great for us to walk around and stretch (the silver lining) plus it made for some unexpected and very scenic photos, as we waited.

We arrived in the late evening, just in time to catch a clear glimpse of the lake before nightfall. We were also in perfect time for dinner followed by the night’s entertainment, a silent disco hosted by three amazing Deejays – DJ Fem, DJ Simples and DJ Jo.
Kabale is cold at night with temperatures as low as 15 degrees Celsius. It felt like it was -15 degrees though (okay maybe that’s an exaggeration) but I do know that it was cold enough to have me up at 7am, unable to go back to sleep. I took an early morning stroll round the lodge, it was foggy and so I couldn’t quite get a clear view of the lake and the islands. It looked more like a large sea of giant clouds, scenic nonetheless.
Before long, the sun was out! I couldn’t have been more excited for sunshine. The lake unraveled before my very eyes with the dotted islands now in absolute clear sight. The lush vegetation scattered across the water is something I could have marveled at all day. We took in the view as we enjoyed the sunshine and as usual, took lots of pictures.
Our last activity was a boat cruise, taken in two shifts. We spent about an hour on the water. I find the sound of the boat cruising on the lake to be very soothing, accompanied with music, drinks and those amazing views.
Before long we were back on the mainland having lunch and getting ready to hit the road once more, back to Kampala. In my opinion, it was a great weekend meeting lots of new people, entertained by amazing Deejays and taking in the beautiful Arcadia Lodge. One word – scenic.
