The Elgon presents a fairly mild hiking adventure that doesn’t require much experience. Standing at 4,321m ASL the highest peak Wagagai is named after Kakai the favourite of all Masaba’s (Bugisu’s forefather) wives believed to be where she hailed from.
Day 1: Presents arguably the toughest of all ascents including “the wall of death” a steep incline tackled with the help of steel ladders and finally a fair ascent to our first base camp at Sasa River. No much wonder that all camps are set up near water, a basic need for life for food and cleaning both body and property.
Day 2: Presents the simplest of ascents with just marshy moorland as the challenge hence the need for good footwear through the most interesting vegetation to Mudde Cave Camp where the party real begins.
Day 3: In my view and by distance the longest as it involves a return trip hitting the summit and back to Mudde Cave Camp. The open plains and bare landscapes don’t make it easier as the energy sapping sun remains overhead for most of the day. Save lots of water and energy bites for this one (my two sense) and thank me later. The thrill of summiting though short-lived provides loads of reason to celebrate by night with many happy to stay out to the wee hours into the morning of day 4.
Day 4: The descent in contrast with all prior days presents a different source of adrenalin – apart from the need to get home, it is also a mandatory task unlike the ascent where one is free to abort mission.
Given the proposed dates, I see a very fitting event to end the year in style or as they say ‘on top of the world.
The Elgon beckons – I must go.
