This is a holiday to Lake Bunyonyi – a scenic Crater Lake located in South Western Uganda between Kisoro and Kabale.
Lake Bunyonyi is a natural freshwater lake that is bilharzia free and safe for swimming. With 29 islands on the lake, Bunyonyi is surrounded by lush terraced hillsides and is a top destination for many foreign and domestic tourists. In my opinion, Lake Bunyonyi is the most beautiful lake in the world!
About 200 bird species have been recorded at the lake area since “Bunyonyi” also means “the place of many little birds”.
Bird species include the white tailed blue monard, grey crowned cranes, the African harrier hawk, herons and egrets, the levillant cuckoo, the cardinal woodpecker and the rufous-breasted wryneck…to mention but a few.
Day 1: Kampala – Drive to Lake Bunyonyi
You will be picked you up from your residence for the start of your safari to Lake Bunyonyi via Mbarara to Kabale South Western Uganda. This will be an interesting 6-hour drive through three different types of vegetation.
The first two hours will take you through typical tropical countryside with large swamps, Mpanga Forest, and the Equator where you can make a brief stop-over and stride the northern and southern hemisphere! Thereafter, you will drive through the flat savannah country where you are likely to observe the famous long-horned Ankole cows.
We shall make a lunch stop in Mbarara before continuing through the impressive hilly country of Kabale, popularly known as "the Switzerland of Uganda", and arrive at Lake Bunyonyi, one of the deepest lakes in the world, late in the afternoon.
This Lake is surrounded by steep mountains and dotted with small islands among which is Natures Prime Island - your destination. We shall transport you with a motor boat to Natures prime Lodge, expect a 20 minutes boat ride.
You can spend the afternoon on the lake in a dugout canoe, or bird watching and relaxing in the evening by the lakeside. In the evening Natures Prime Island Island, at your request, can entertain you with traditional dancers as you warm up over a camp fire. A good restaurant and bar, hot showers in self-contained tents, are assured at Natures prime Islands Lodge.

Day 2: Explore Lake Bunyonyi (Community Tour, Nature walk and Boat Cruise)

You may choose to visit the Orugano Rain Forest which has diverse plants and animals or spend some time interacting with the Batwa (pygmies) community who inhabit parts of the forest and its surrounding areas. Birders will treat themselves with well over 300 bird species recorded for example, Otters, pied kingfishers, swallows among others.
A full-day canoe trek on Bunyonyi will introduce you to the major islands and their rich history, but also to a traditional healer and a craft maker who live on a peninsula with the most complete views of the 25-kilometers long lake. Energize yourself with the hiking as well as the great time spent in traditional dugout canoes.
